General Safety Tips

·         Above all, trust your instincts - keep out of dangerous situations in the first place.

At Home

·         Keep all doors locked. Install dead bolt locks.

·         Install peephole. Don't let strangers in, or let them know you are home alone. Instruct children to do the same.

·         Don't let strangers use your phone; make the phone call for them.

·         If you live alone, list only your initial and last name on the mailbox and in the telephone book.

·         Don't enter your home if it looks as if though it has been broken into. Call the police.

·         Don't hide your keys to your home outside.

·         Keep flashlights at handy locations in your home in case you lose power.

·         Keep the outside of your house well lit.

Driving

·         Keep windows up and doors locked.

·         Do not hitchhike. Do not pick up hitchhikers.

·         Check to make sure no one is in your car before you get in.

·         Travel on well lit, and populated streets.

·         Park in well lit areas, close to your destination.

·         Be aware of your surroundings when approaching your car. Have your keys ready.

·         Always have a cell phone when traveling, especially on long trips and when traveling alone.

·         If you have car trouble raise the hood and wait inside the car with the doors locked. Place your valuables on the floor or out of sight. Call a tow truck or police on your cell phone. If you do not have access to a cell phone and someone stops to offer help ask them to call a tow truck or police for help.

·         If you think you are being followed do not drive home. Instead drive to a police station, gas station, or convenience store to get help.

Walking or Jogging

·         Carry a whistle.

·         Walk confidently; be aware of your surroundings. If you think someone is following you cross the street. Don't be afraid to run and scream.

·         Walk or Jog on well lit streets, stay away from alleys, doorways and shrubs.

·         If you are driven home at night ask the driver to wait until you are inside.

In Social Situations

·         Be very cautious if you do not know someone well.

·         Be very clear and assertive about communicating your limits and stick to them.

·         Don't use drugs. If you are an adult and drink alcohol always know your limits, stay in control and remember alcohol affects you judgment and decision making.

·         Avoid secluded places.

Following an Attack

·         Observe and recall all details.

·         Immediately notify police.

·         Call a friend.

·         Cooperate with police questioning.

·         Undergo (or have your child undergo) a medical examination.

·         Do not change or disturb anything where attack occurred.

·         Get psychological counseling and continued help if necessary.

·         Take legal action.

ATM Machines

·         Avoid ATM machines at night.

·         Approach ATM machine paying attention to your surroundings.

·         If something looks suspicious or wrong do not approach the ATM machine
